History

Zenon Dance Company was founded in 1982 by Linda Z. Andrews. Since its first performance in 1983, Zenon has grown to be one of the nation's premiere repertory dance companies. It is one of only a few companies in the United States to commission and perform both modern and jazz works created by emerging Twin Cities choreographers as well as internationally renowned masters.

High energy, high quality and amazingly athletic, Zenon continually has offered inventive, accessible dance for new and seasoned audiences. The company’s unique, eclectic repertory has allowed it to reach a broad range of audiences—from dedicated Twin Cities' dance enthusiasts to at-risk youth in Minneapolis to elder care residents in Greater Minnesota.

The company is also recognized for its unparalleled distinction as a company of trained "teaching artists." Zenon's professional dancers are trained to teach the same skills they perform. This enables the company to maintain the same artistic excellence while teaching dance in school gymnasiums and community centers that they exhibit on concert stages.

As a pioneer in the field of dance education, the company has developed a residency curriculum that incorporates the programs of the hosting school or organization with the technique and artistry of dance.  Over the years, Zenon has grown in its commitment to working with diverse populations, especially the deaf and hard-of-hearing community.

As Minnesota's leading contemporary dance company, Zenon has matured over the years, expanding and deepening its relationships with choreographers, audiences, dancers, students, and community. Zenon has played an essential leadership role in cultivating the cultural wealth of its Twin Cities home by delivering artistically superb, cutting edge modern and jazz dance through creation, production, promotion, and education.
